PRoBE is a cross-disciplinary group of engineers, mathematical modellers and microbiologists in the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) and the School of Life Sciences (SLS) at Heriot-Watt University.

The research focus for our work has centred on the identification, quantification and modelling of pathogen transmission routes within buildings; combining engineering flow and bioaerosol transport modelling using a combination of molecular biology, as well as, traditional microbiological culturing techniques to develop algorithms to drive the engineering models.

Our extensive laboratory facilities have been designed to investigate bioaerosol transmission via sanitary plumbing systems and room ventilation systems. The laboratory work is supplemented by investigative studies in occupied buildings ranging from large campus style hospitals to super high-rise tower blocks (50+ storeys) to domestic houses.
